Cowboy Coaches: The Dallas cowboys coach history, this history includes only five head coaches. All of which have been in the last decade. None of the head coaches had previous head coaching experience in the NFL before taking over as coach for the Dallas Cowboys. The first 29 years was led by Tom Landry resulting in five Super Bowl appearances and two wins Jimmy Johnson led the Cowboys for two Super Bowl wins. Barry switzer led them to one win in the Super Bowl during his four year term as coach.
Tom Landry: 1960 to 1988
Tom Landry was the only coach the Dallas Cowboys ever had for many years. He was there from day one and built the cowboy franchise into America's Team. His remarkable career with the Cowboys finished with a record of 270-178-6 . Landry led the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl Championships, five NFC championships, they played in 14 NFL or NFC title games. The very impressive 20 consecutive winning seasons, 12 division wins and 18 playoffs. During his incredible career he only one the coach of the year award one time.
Jimmy Johnson: 1989 to 1993
Jimmy Johnson era as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys began in a way that left a bad taste in many cowboy fans mouth. To this day I still dislike Jerry Jones and would not trust him with a nickel. This left Jimmy Johnson in a bad situation and may have been scrutinized rather harshly. The 1 - 15 if showing in his first year as coach of the Cowboys did not help his reputation with the Cowboy fans. His 7-9 record of his second year as coach won him Coach of The Year honors. Jimmy Johnson was shooting for the Super Bowl from day one and he achieved this in 1992 and 1993. His stats as the Dallas Cowboys coach was 51-37. He parted ways with Jerry Jones in 1993 after clashes with the owner.
Barry Switzer 1994 to 1997
Jones brought in a Barry switzer as head coach of the cowboys. The Dallas cowboys did not win their third Super Bowl in a row in this led many to name him 501 rich preferred to 500 coaches could have led the cowboys to another Super Bowl when and switzer was 501. The term 501 was discarded the next year when the cowboys won their fifth Super Bowl. In 1997 he resigned after a disappointing record and a lack of discipline. Switzer's parting record was 45-28.
Chan Gaily: 1998 to 1999
Chan Gailey lasted only two years with the Dallas cowboys. His regular season record was 18-14. The cowboys became the first team in the NFC east to win all intra-division games under his tenure. Chan Gailey was fired after losing the wild-card game against the Minnesota Vikings. This was preceded by losing both first-round playoff games. He is now referred to as the first cowboy head coach not to win a Super Bowl.
Jerry Jones of Barry switzer to resign after the cowboys did not make the playoffs in 1997. After 34 days of searching for the new head coach of the Dallas cowboys which involved former 49er head coach George Seifert, packer defensive coordinator Sherman Lewis, and UCLA head coach Terry Donahue, Chan Gailey was chosen to lead the Cowboys.
